their support for the environment by banning plastic shopping bags. we sent kpix 5's len ramirez to find out the pros and cons. >> reporter: allen, i'm here in san jose. and san jose was one of the first big cities to have a bag ordinance in effect. it's been going on for more than a year so a lot of folks are getting used to the idea. and regular shoppers say it is now the new normal. >>> reporter: life after the plastic bag ban in san jose. >> i'm glad you asked. >> reporter: a year and five months since it's been on the books, and it's not a sad sack story for jill malone. >> you know, i just have a bunch of bags in my car. if i forget sometimes i just put the food in a cart and i put it -- bag it in the trunk m i think it>> rte but others complain about paying the extra dime f recyclable bag if they come shopping without them. >> it's a pain to buy them when i forget them. >> reporter: more cities are banning plastic bags including 12 new cities in san mateo county. plastic bags end up as litter, clog storm drains, don't biodegrade as easily and most are made out of unrecyclable material

every community took advantage of the great weather to give the environment a little extra care. teams of volunteers from pacific beach to golden gate park could be seen working together on cleanup and beautification projects in oak ladies and gentlemen, many locations, including lake merritt were getting special attention, from trash pickup, graffiti removal, weeding and planting, 3500 volunteers were working to give the city a makeover. earth day is the city's largest single day volunteer project. >> about 400 volunteers are coming together this weekend to build hope and affordable housing in east oakland. earth day laurens the three-day habitat for humanity buildup. volunteer crews are constructing eight homes. what would normally take three months of construction will be completed by monday night. thanks to the community and corporate teams. the project is sponsored by the east basil con valley chapter of habitat for humanity. and hopefully they will have good weather as they undertake that project. >> monday and tuesday, expect this through next week as well. live doppler 7hd, all

san francisco. county officials say the reusable bags are just much better for the environment. one shopper she had she agreed after seeing them floating around in the breeze in her neighborhood. >> i saw a bag fly away. i like this idea. >> but you have to remember to bring all your bags when you shop. >> i put in the car. >> i think it's smart. i just think it's one more thing for us parents to remember but i think it's a good idea. i have no problems with it whatsoever. we're very well prepared. we've been worrying about this for months so it's not a surprise. >> signs are up near the doors letting people know what's going on. san mateo, carlos, redwood city and east palo alto will follow soon with this same rule. the law basically applies to grocery stores, convenience stores, but not to restaurants. plastic bags can be used for produce, meat and prescriptions if needed. today shoppers telling us if they bought a little extra, paid a little more than they intended to, they were actually given free bags, reusable bags to get them started. they were pretty pleased with that. repor

[ sniffing ] [ seagulls squawking ] >> following the latest with the bay bridge and those bolts that were found to be defective. jackie sissel is discovering more about these boats and their history. >> there are new reports out this morning indicating caltrans actually ordered some tests as early as 2008 on those boatsbulletolts. 96 of these bolts were put into the bay bridge. as they were being tightened, 33 of them actually it failed, cracked. the report today they say as early as 2008 there were questions about the integrity of these bowls and the manufacturer who actually made the bolts. that was the icing co. and ohio. caltrans ashley ordered additional tests on the bolts. they wanted to make sure that they were structurally it fine. for whatever reason, those tests were not done. one-third of the 96 bullets ultimately failed. why did tests were not done is obviously part of the investigation. how're they going to fix this? last week there was a press conference addressing this
